Don’t Waste Your Life

44988: Don't Waste Your LifeAnother book that I have read recently is: Don’t Waste Your Life, by John Piper. Like Mark Driscoll, John Piper is one of those pastors that I like to listen to. Frankly, I have not been listening to Piper’s sermons recently. I found this book very thought provoking. At its heart, this book is an application of the themes that John Piper is best known for. His catch phrase is probably that “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” In this book, Piper tries to kindle the fire of applying this concept in daily life. Using an illustration from his evangelist father’s life, of a man late in life who finally accepted Christ, and realized that he had wasted nearly his entire life, Piper tries to encourage his readers to find out how to live so that Christ may be glorified in our lives.

This is not just a book about vocational ministry. Piper also talks about the importance of those who do not do ministry as their primary vocation. He believes that work is a setting in which God should be glorified. This topic is frequently overlooked in the church today. Piper does not stop there. He also challenges his readers to consider what their role should be in reaching the world with the gospel. His hope is that for many readers, that will include a call to serve God in missions, whether on a short-term basis, or on a long-term basis.

Piper is almost always on the mark. He does not miss here. One of the great things about Piper, and Desiring God Ministries, is their passion for making their materials available. All of Piper’s sermons are freely available for download, as a podcast, and on iTunes. Plus, now they have made most of John Piper’s books available for download as .pdf files. If you have Adobe Acrobat, and don’t want to pay for the book, it can be downloaded for free.
